Tasting notes:
Grenache also takes the lead in the second of this year’s McLaren-Vale-sourced Best In Show laureates – though on this occasion it’s partnered by 21 per cent Shiraz and 9 per cent Mataro (Mourvèdre) to make a classic Aussie GSM blend. For all that, you’ll find it a McLaren Vale wine first and foremost. It's not black-red, as GSMs from other regions might be, but dark purple red, and the bush-fragrant, soft skiffle sweetness of its tender aromatic profile (you can tell the Grenache is in charge) is also distinctively regional. There’s ample weight on the palate, and the other two varieties swing in to divert the sweetness out towards something a little sterner, a little more plant-like, and with a different spectrum of primary fruit. The tannins here are soft, leaving the wine’s rounded, sunbeam acidity to account for the wine’s balance. Fine composition here.
