Tasting notes:
Pic St Loup is the leading appellation of Eastern Languedoc. Its magnificent limestone soils, combined with the fact that it is slightly cooler than other Languedoc appellations and with slightly higher rainfall, means that its wines have a freshness and a poise sometimes hard to find further west. This blend of Syrah and Grenache illustrates the attraction admirably. The wine is dark black-red, with pure blackcurrant and cherry scents in which Syrah (as so often here) takes the lead. On the palate, the wine is no less pure: an explosion of Syrah aromatic charm supported and filled out by the flesh of Grenache. It’s limpid, smooth, seductive, as fresh as it is sweet, with a spiralling acidity through the palate which gives the wine unrivalled lift and energy. It’s hard to imagine a more comely or tender red, or one better calculated to put a smile on the drinker’s face.
